For the first time in its history ESPN broadcasted all games of the Euro 2008 live in North America. ESPN’s coverage included pre- and post-game studio updates. The ESPN-family and ABC combined to present the 31 matches; all matches were optionally also available in high definition.
After positive coverage rating results for the 2008 tournament, with an average of 655,000 viewers, ESPN will likely also cover the European Championship matches in 2012 across North America. This is yet to be confirmed.
ESPN's decision to cover the entire previous European soccer tournament was somewhat revolutionary and indicated a shift towards an attempt to americanize the sport.
Given the fact that the competition is the third most watch sports event in the world -- following the World Cup and the Olympics --it is finally being made accessible to viewers in the US. |
